22 May 05 I Fell for It, Hook, Line & Living Receiver …

Another thing I recently rented from Netflix was the bonus material DVD for “Donnie Darko: Special Edition.” (Great flick.)

Among the extras was a documentary called “#1 Fan: A Darkomentary.” It was purporting to be the winner of a contest they held on the website for documentary submissions.

I watched the actions of Darryl Donaldson, who appeared to be more and more of a manically wrong fan — we’re talking a seriously obsessed one — as I watched. There were these off-kilter moments with minor characters in the movies, and it culminates in him kissing director Richard Kelly at a convention. It was unnerving to watch.

And I fell for it. It was a fake documentary (although only Todd Berger, playing Darryl, knew it was fake — Darko’s director and minor characters didn’t know it was fake until later).

I gotta offer a gentle salute to them — normally, I’m pretty hard to sucker.
