Rocket City

27-Oct-05

God bless the power of the Internet — I finally found some information — actually, an entire webpage devoted to — a musical I was misremembering as Gather ‘Round Children. It actually has the less memorable name of Rocket City (or once The American Dream … Interrupted). It’s a very, very peacenik musical [...]

Bad Habits Biological?

27-Oct-05

MIT has recently found that being stuck in habits can actually be a bit of a biologically based problem:
Habitual activity–smoking, eating fatty foods, gambling–changes neural activity patterns in a specific region of the brain when habits are formed. These neural patterns created by habit can be changed or altered. But when a stimulus from the [...]

Catholic Priest Suspends 900 Students’ Freedom of Speech

27-Oct-05

I recently came across an online article from my old hometown newspaper, the Asbury Park Press:
When students post their faces, personal diaries and gossip on Web sites like Myspace.com and Xanga.com, it is not simply harmless teen fun, according to one Sussex County Catholic school principal.
It’s an open invitation to predators and an activity that [...]

Left Behind

27-Oct-05

I love the fact that the website for Left Behind: World at War features a review saying it “lit a file under [the reviewer's] tail” and another review comparing it to “paranoia fables.”

Neighborhoods

27-Oct-05

Thanks to Wikipedia and its Neighborhoods of Chicago article, I’ve learned that technically, the address I’m moving to is not an Andersonville address, but is instead right on Andersonville’s southern border, in the New Chinatown section of the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago.

Woo-Frickin’-Hoo!

26-Oct-05

Being someone who lives on the North Side, I’m, by default, a Cubs fan.
And, in all honesty, I’m not really a major Cubs fan, either — I’m just not normally a baseball fan.
That having been said, it’s a very proud evening to be a Chicagoan — our first World Series win in 88 [...]

EULAs are End-User License Agreements. They’re those little windows of legalese that show up when you first activate an application. They very often contain very nasty legalese, but I’ve never seen any that were worse than this nasty little bugger by this company, disclosed in this article:
You agree, if purchasing by credit card [...]

How to Download Embedded Media from Trickily Encoded Webpages

23-Oct-05

Ever since the upgrade to Tiger, Safari had lost several options of downloading embedded media. Before, one could find a listing of embedded media files in Safari’s Activity window; that feature was removed when Safari was upgraded to 2.0, incidentally making it much less competitive compared to other browsers such as Firefox and Opera [...]
