An absolutely heartbreaking and breathtakingly poignant tale written by a father about his stillborn daughter — and a slightly kinder postscript a year and a half later.
This is not my work — but I find it particularly fascinating, and wanted to reprint it. It was authored by someone named Athena and posted to Craigslist, where it made the Best of Craigslist section.

The obituary of Frederic Arthur (Fred) Clark, who died on June 18, 2006, from the Richmond Times-Dispatch:
Frederic Arthur (Fred) Clark, who had tired of reading obituaries noting other’s courageous battles with this or that disease, wanted it known that he lost his battle as a result of an automobile accident on June 18, 2006. True [...]

I think the lyrics are adapted from a Shakespeare sonnet, actually.

A guy loses on the very first question of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.
I keep an eye on Jack Chick’s site — not because I believe in his particular brand of fire-and-brimstone hatred, but because, well, sometimes the frothing rabid extremes carry their own odd mutative quality that fascinates. I followed a link at the bottom of one of his newly released pamphlets, which led me to [...]
Buffy and Angel creator Joss Whedon on Battlestar Galactica:
I’m just sneaking in to say I’ve been continuing to watch BSG, the wife and I are about halfway through season one and gushing isn’t gonna cover this one. You guys have heard me gush, so it won’t have any real meaning. You have to imagine Pauline [...]
YouTube can be fun. Some great moments from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air … click the link below to see this full post, as otherwise this’d take up the full page.
If you’ve never bothered to watch Jennifer Garner’s “13 Going On 30,” it’s actually a fairly charming entry into the “kid in adult body” category, because Garner has a unique ability to portray goof despite being supermodel-beautiful. I can see why people might want to avoid it, but it’s actually a fine movie.
But if [...]
As a follow-up to my Jimmy Fallon-bashing, here’s a great example of why seeing a consummate comedy professional crack up (two, actually!) is all the more funny when they’re not doing it every skit:
Holy crud.
I hope that kid doesn’t sound like Fran Drescher when she hits puberty.
Peter does a little number from The Music Man …

I just watched Fever Pitch, and seeing him act on the screen in front of me, only one thought crossed my mind:
Wow, Jimmy Fallon is just as fucking annoying and horrifically untalented when he’s in a movie.
I think I began thinking what an asshole! when I’d be watching Saturday Night Love and the dumbass would [...]

The Declaration of Independence in American English, courtesy of H.L. Mencken:
All we got to say on this proposition is this: first, me and you is as good as anybody else, and maybe a damn sight better; second, nobody ain’t got no right to take away none of our rights; third, every man has got a [...]
Enjoyed an old episode of “The Show With Ze Frank,” which had two wonderful gems:
The Washington Post reports that US forces killed a local leader of al-Qaida this weekend, dealing what US military authorities call, a “blow” to the insurgency. Awesome, you guys dealt another blow? It’s like blow after blow after blow. [...]

I was rereading some of my old answers on Ask MetaFilter, and came across this lovely snark I made when suggesting a 20-something start contributing to his 401(k):
I know it feels odd to think about planning for something that far out, but you really don’t want to be eating cat food when Pierce Bush III [...]

I haven’t stopped and made a personal entry in this weblog in a while — it’s been mostly political commentary, or me passing along various commentary from places I’ve found on the Internet. I suppose that’s not an entirely wrong way to go about keeping a weblog, but it does make it a bit [...]
Okay, this one gets its own blog post. Homina.
Amazingly thought-provoking short-short-short:
How trippy it is to see these voices performed live …
What if original Star Trek episodes were remastered like Lucasfilm did with the Star Wars trilogy? It almost was done with “Star Trek Enhanced,” and here’s a little piece of what you might’ve seen had the project gone forward:
“Jesus Christ, Diane, could you listen to that last call for me, please?”
Hee hee hee hee hee …
