24. Why do Flushometer valves “run on” after water pressure is restored?

Flushometer valves require a residual pressure to keep them closed. Many valve supply stops include a back check valve to keep the valve pressurized at all times. When pressure in the valve drops, the valve remains open until the running line pressure is high enough to reseat the valve (approximately 5 psi). Sediment and debris may work loose from the supply lines when the lines are repressurized. This dirt may deposit inside the Flushometer valve, inside the supply stop back check, or clog the diaphragm bypass, and therefore prevent the valve from closing. Our Royal® Flushometer diaphragm with dual-filtration rings effectively prevents these types of clogs.

[source] This is why I woke up at four o’clock in the morning and haven’t gone back to sleep. So I’m getting rid of a few things I wanted to blog about in the meantime. But, just, oy, y’know?

Newsbloggers: “LaVena Johnson, a private in the Army was brutally raped, beaten and killed in 2005. Her teeth were knocked in, her nose broken, she had teeth marks on her body and there was corrosive liquid poured into her vagina, most likely to destroy evidence. Then she was shot and her body set on fire. After all this, the military called it … a suicide. [...] A trail of blood from the private’s body led into the tent of a military contractor from Kellogg, Brown & Root (a subsidiary of Halliburton at the time).”

RAND Corporation: “A recent RAND research effort sheds light on this issue by investigating how terrorist groups have ended in the past. By analyzing a comprehensive roster of terrorist groups that existed worldwide between 1968 and 2006, the authors found that most groups ended because of operations carried out by local police or intelligence agencies or because they negotiated a settlement with their governments. Military force was rarely the primary reason a terrorist group ended, and few groups within this time frame achieved victory.” Especially remarkable given: “The RAND Corporation [...] is a nonprofit global policy think tank first formed to offer research and analysis to the United States armed forces” (wiki).

Mother Jones: “But these two Marys share a lot in common—a Mother Jones investigation has found that McFate and Sapone are, in fact, the same person. And this discovery has caused the leaders of gun violence prevention organizations to conclude that for years they have been penetrated—at the highest levels—by the NRA or other pro-gun parties.”

Wikipedia: Exformation: “Exformation is everything we do not actually say but have in our heads when, or before, we say anything at all - whereas information is the measurable, demonstrable utterance we actually come out with.”

Orson Scott Card, science-fiction author and raving homophobe: “Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down.”

10 Things You Should Know About the Internet: “‘We set up a telephone connection between us and the guys at SRI,’ Kleinrock recalled. ‘We typed the L, and we asked on the phone, ‘Do you see the L?’ ‘Yes, we see the L,’ came the response. We typed the O, and we asked, ‘Do you see the O?’ ‘Yes, we see the O.’ Then we typed the G, and the system crashed!’ They immediately rebooted and this time, ARPANET sprung to life.”

The LEXIS-NEXIS search term that the White House employed to research the background of candidates for the Department of Justice: [first name of a candidate] and pre/2 [last name of a candidate] w/7 bush or gore or republican! or democrat! or charg! or accus! or criticiz! or blam! or defend! or iran contra or clinton or spotted owl or florida recount or sex! or controvers! or racis! or fraud! or investigat! or bankrupt! or layoff! or downsiz! or PNTR or NAFTA or outsourc! or indict! or enron or kerry or iraq or wmd! or arrest! or intox! or fired or sex! or racis! or intox! or slur! or arrest! or fired or controvers! or abortion! or gay! or homosexual! or gun! or firearm!

New York State Board of Law Examiners: “We do not support Apple products in any form including Intel-based laptops running Boot Camp - no exceptions.”

Metanoia: “In Carl Jung’s psychology, metanoia indicates a spontaneous attempt of the psyche to heal itself of unbearable conflict by melting down and then being reborn in a more adaptive form.”
