My Small Claim to GeekFame …

Now that NetNewsWire 2.1b17 has gone into public beta, I can reveal a neat little geekery tidbit.

I have a preference named after me in NetNewsWire. Cool, huh?

I’m on the private beta mailing list, and at one point, I was griping about how URLs break without brackets around them. I was trying to convince Brent to code the new “Mail Link” so that the brackets were included, but as Safari doesn’t do it, the decision was made to have the default be without brackets.

Given Brent’s absolutely huge customer base, I understand why he wants a lot of NNW’s conventions to emulate Safari. A lot of Macheads — the vast majority — seem to see Safari as “the Right Way of Doing Things” for even the smallest of conventions. What with the sheer popularity of NNW, even the smallest differentiation of a quirk results in hundreds of e-mails saying, “Why Don’t You Do It the Safari Way?”

But, Brent is an incredibly nice guy … and so was born the “addMikesBracketsforLink” hidden preference:

defaults write com.ranchero.NetNewsWire addMikesBracketsForMailLink 1

I’m totally geeking out, here. My small claim to GeekFame …
